Lingerie Care Guide — How to Wash, Dry & Store Your Pieces

Lingerie Care Guide

How to wash, dry and store your lingerie so it stays beautiful, supportive and comfortable for years — not months. The essential know-how that makes a real difference.

✨ Proper care makes lingerie last 3–5 times longer

A few extra minutes after each wear is all it takes to protect the shape, elasticity and fabric quality of your Secretelles pieces — and get genuine value from your investment.

🧴

Gentle delicates detergent

Choose a mild, alcohol-free formula designed specifically for fine fabrics

❄️

Cold water only

Heat permanently damages elastics and fine fibres — there's no coming back from it

🚫

Never the tumble dryer

Even a low-heat cycle will destroy delicate fabrics and elastic beyond repair

🧺

Dry flat, in the air

The only way to preserve the shape and elasticity of every piece long-term

Why proper lingerie care actually matters

Your lingerie isn't like the rest of your wardrobe. It's made from fine fabrics — delicate lace, natural silk, smooth satin, lightweight tulle — chosen specifically for how they feel against your skin. That same quality that makes them feel so good is what makes them need a little more attention when it comes to washing.

Worn directly against the skin every day, lingerie is exposed to body oils, perspiration and friction. Without the right care routine, these gradually break down the fibres and cause:

  • Loss of elasticity and support in bras
  • Fading and discolouration of precious fabrics
  • Gradual distortion of cups and bands
  • Irreparable damage to lace and embroidery
  • Pieces ageing far sooner than they should

Treat your lingerie with the same care you'd give anything worth keeping. A few minutes of attention after each wear can add years to the life of your favourite pieces.

Know your fabrics

Different fabrics have different needs. Here's what you need to know about the main materials used in fine lingerie and how to care for each:

🌸 Lace

Delicate and precise, lace is vulnerable to snagging and tearing. Always hand wash — never wring or scrub.

✋ Hand wash❄️ Cold water🧺 Dry flat

✨ Silk

Incomparably soft, silk is highly sensitive to heat and harsh chemicals. It needs the gentlest possible handling.

✋ Hand wash❄️ Cold water🚫 No ironing

💫 Satin

Smooth and lustrous, satin snags easily. Turn pieces inside out before washing to protect the surface sheen.

✋ Hand wash❄️ Cold water🧺 Hang to dry

🌿 Cotton

More resilient, but cotton can shrink in warm water. A delicate machine cycle works, though hand washing is always better.

🌀 Delicate cycle🌡️ Max 30°C🧺 Air dry

🕸️ Tulle & Mesh

Lightweight and airy, tulle distorts easily. Use a lingerie wash bag to protect it from any friction or snagging.

🛍️ Wash bag❄️ Cold water🧺 Dry flat

🎀 Microfibre

More forgiving and quick-drying, microfibre still benefits from a gentle wash rather than a full machine cycle.

How to hand wash lingerie — step by step

Hand washing is the gold standard for fine lingerie — especially underwired bras, delicate sets and anything with embroidery or lace. Follow these six steps for the best results every time:

1

Fill your basin

Use a clean sink or bowl filled with cold or lukewarm water — never hot. Add a small amount of gentle, alcohol-free detergent formulated for delicates. Mix until fully dissolved before adding your lingerie.

2

Soak

Gently submerge your lingerie in the soapy water. Leave to soak for 10–15 minutes (up to 30 minutes for heavily worn pieces). This gives the detergent time to lift dirt naturally without any aggressive scrubbing.

3

Wash gently

Move the pieces slowly through the water using a gentle squeezing motion. Never twist, wring or scrub — this stretches the elastics and damages fibres in ways that can't be undone.

4

Rinse thoroughly

Empty the soapy water and rinse with clean cold water until all traces of detergent are gone. Gently press the water out with your hands — never twist or wring.

5

Remove excess water

Lay the piece flat on a clean dry towel. Roll the towel up gently with the lingerie inside and press lightly to absorb the moisture — far kinder to the fabric than any wringing or spinning.

6

Dry properly

Lay flat on a drying rack or hang a bra from the centre bridge (the part between the cups). Never hang by the straps — this stretches them permanently. Keep away from direct heat and sunlight.

💡 Pro tip: spot cleaning between washes

For a small stain between washes, dampen a cotton pad with cold water and a tiny drop of gentle soap. Dab the stained area gently — never rub. Then blot with a clean damp cloth to remove the soap. Leave to air dry naturally.

Machine washing — what you need to know

Hand washing is always best, but some pieces can handle a machine cycle if you follow a few key rules. Always check the care label first.

  • Use a lingerie wash bag — It protects delicate fabrics from friction and stops straps getting tangled in the drum
  • Fasten all hooks and clasps — Prevents them catching on other items or damaging the drum
  • Select a delicate or wool cycle — Minimal agitation and reduced spin speed
  • Cold water only — Heat destroys elastics and causes irreversible shrinkage
  • Delicates-specific detergent — No bleach, no fabric softener, no harsh additives
  • Wash with similar items only — Keep delicates together, away from zips and heavy fabrics

⚠️ These pieces must NEVER go in the machine

Always hand wash the following:

  • Natural silk lingerie and chemises
  • Underwired bras
  • Heavily padded or moulded cup bras
  • Pieces with fine embroidery, sequins or beading
  • Corsets and structured shapewear

Drying lingerie — the right way

How you dry your lingerie matters just as much as how you wash it. Heat is the number one enemy of fine fabrics and elastics — and the damage it causes is permanent.

✅ Do this

  • Always air dry — no exceptions
  • Lay bras flat or hang from the centre bridge
  • Reshape cups gently while still damp
  • Dry in a well-ventilated space
  • Make sure each piece is fully dry before storing

❌ Never do this

  • Tumble dry — even on a low or delicate setting
  • Hang a bra by its straps
  • Dry on a radiator or in direct sunlight
  • Use a hair dryer to speed things up
  • Put lingerie away while it's still damp

⏱️ How long does it take to dry?

Most lingerie takes 24–48 hours to dry completely when air dried. Plan your washing ahead so you always have fresh pieces available — it's also a good reason to rotate your bras properly.

How often should you wash lingerie?

Finding the right frequency is about balancing good hygiene with preserving your fabrics over time:

ItemRecommended frequencyNotes
Knickers & ThongsAfter every wearNon-negotiable for hygiene
BrasEvery 3–4 wearsRotate between multiple bras so elastics can recover
Sports brasAfter every sessionSweat accelerates fabric breakdown significantly
ShapewearEvery 1–2 wearsClose skin contact means more frequent washing
Bodysuits & CamisolesEvery 2–3 wearsDepends on how much skin contact and activity level
Chemises & PyjamasEvery 3–4 wearsMore frequently in summer or warm nights
Tights & StockingsAfter every wearFine fibres absorb body oils quickly
Dressing gowns1–2 times a weekDepends on frequency and duration of use

💡 The rotation rule

Never wear the same bra two days in a row. Elastics need 24–48 hours to spring back to their original shape. With 3–4 bras in regular rotation, each one will last significantly longer — a genuinely good return on your investment.

Storing lingerie properly

Careful storage protects your pieces between wears, preserves their shape and meaningfully extends their lifespan:

Bras

  • Store flat, cups facing upward — Stack them one inside the other, never crushing
  • Never fold cups in half — This permanently distorts moulded and padded cups
  • Fasten hooks before storing — Prevents them catching on other pieces in the drawer
  • A dedicated lingerie drawer — Keep pieces separate from the rest of your wardrobe

Knickers & Delicate pieces

  • Fold neatly or roll — Rolling saves space and minimises unwanted creases
  • Sort by occasion — Everyday, special, nightwear, sports...
  • Use drawer dividers — Keeps everything organised and easy to find
  • Don't overfill — Delicate fabrics need space and air to stay fresh

Special occasion & luxury pieces

  • Store in breathable fabric pouches — Never in plastic, which traps moisture
  • Acid-free tissue paper — For long-term storage of natural silk pieces
  • Away from direct light — Prevents fading of delicate colours
  • Natural lavender sachets — Keeps things fresh without harsh chemicals

Understanding care label symbols

A quick guide to the symbols you'll find on the labels of your lingerie:

🪣

Machine wash

Temperature shown inside the symbol

Hand wash only

Do not put in the machine under any circumstances

🚫

Do not wash in water

Dry clean only

Bleaching permitted

Crossed out = no bleach under any circumstances

Tumble dry permitted

Crossed out = no tumble drying (applies to almost all fine lingerie)

♨️

Ironing

Dots indicate maximum temperature allowed

🏷️ Label missing or unreadable?

When in doubt, always default to the safest approach: hand wash in cold water with a gentle detergent, then dry flat. This works for virtually all fine lingerie fabrics and won't cause damage to anything delicate.

Caring for lingerie when travelling

Your favourite pieces deserve the same care on the road as they get at home:

  • A rigid lingerie travel case — Protects bras from being crushed or misshapen in your suitcase
  • Tuck knickers inside cups — Saves space and helps the cups keep their shape in transit
  • A compact wash bag — Essential for a quick, careful hand wash at your destination
  • Travel-size delicate detergent — Hotel products are often far too harsh for fine fabrics
  • Roll rather than fold — Fewer creases, less damage to delicate fabrics
  • Keep away from shoes and toiletries — Avoids unwanted stains or odours

💡 The hotel sink trick

Wash your delicates in the bathroom sink with your travel detergent. Hang them in the bathroom overnight — the ambient steam from showers helps fabrics naturally relax and de-crease as they dry. By morning, your pieces will be fresh and ready to wear.

The mistakes that quietly damage your lingerie

🚫 8 habits to stop immediately

  • Using ordinary laundry detergent — Far too harsh for fine fibres and delicate elastics
  • Washing in warm or hot water — Destroys elastics and causes shrinkage that can't be reversed
  • Tumble drying — Heat damage is permanent, even on the gentlest setting
  • Wringing wet pieces — Permanently distorts and stretches the fabric
  • Wearing the same bra every day — Exhausted elastics never fully recover
  • Using fabric softener — Gradually coats fibres and reduces elasticity over time
  • Spraying perfume directly onto lingerie — The alcohol in perfume damages silk and satin
  • Putting lingerie away damp — Risk of mildew, bad odours and stubborn stains
